One Country, our System: all Development comes from the Party

The following are excerpts from a “Xinwen Lianbo” newsitem on Sunday (July 5). It may give you an idea as to why the international response to Beijing’s demolition of Hong Kong’s autonomy has been rather weak. News like this from “Xinwen Lianbo” is addressing two spheres of the global public: mainlanders at home (in awe of their own collective greatness), and business people or people with business interests (at home, in Hong Kong, and abroad).

Notice the extensive use of Xi Jinping‘s party titles: “comrade” or “secretary general”. Xinwen Lianbo presents the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area project as a party feat, rather than as a national or, God forbid, regional achievement.

He emphasized that the great bridge had to be applied and managed well, so as to play an important role in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
