  1. I’m happy to see Tsai win. She has always struck me as a decent, reasonable person, well suited to government. I prefer her to Ma, but this does not mean I disapproved terribly of Ma either.

However, I really doubt that the economic malaise affecting Taiwan is going to suddenly end with her election. Indeed this may well be beyond her control as it depends in large part on the economic situation in mainland China.

Unlike her CCP counterparts, however, she cannot simply lie and falsify the statistics about the economic situation. I expect state-controlled mainland Chinese media to launch every kind of attack at her over the next four years, including the crudest invective: if it is seen as fair game to call a female reporter a “bitch” (pu fang), then there is nothing they won’t stoop to.

  2. Pu fang? Where did that come from? I meant, of course, po fu.

That’s not extremely unlikely, but only time will show. They haven’t got started yet, and seem to wait for clearer indications during the four-months transition period, or when she actually assumes office. An uneasy propagandistic armistice wouldn’t appear unlikely to me, at least for some time to come.
