New Car Registration Rules: Death Blow to Car Shops?

Beijing’s city authorities will allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered for 2011 – one-third of this year’s total, reports the BBC. Heilongjiang News quotes estimates saying that out of Beijing’s more than 400 car shops, 50 to 80 would go out of business as a result.

There was no way to stop the replacement of bicycles by cars, a website from Hangzhou quoted Red Net (红网) in April 2008. But the Kingdom of Bicycles自行车王国), a term apparently first coined by Time Magazine long ago, may find ways to survive, at least in Beijing, as the traffic situation is going to deteriorate less rapidly than during the past few years.

There had been a few articles in recent years quoting bicyclists – out of passion or out of economic necessity – complaining that cars in Beijing were crossing into the bicycling lanes high-handedly, making life even there life-dangerous.
