Evgeny Bazhanov is vice chancellor of research and international relations at the foreign ministry’s Diplomatic Academy in Moscow. From 1985 to 1991, he served as Mikhail Gorbachev‘s adviser on foreign policy.

The Voice of Russia’s (VoR) Chinese service website quotes from explanations Bazhanov offers for the reformist approach the Soviet Union took under Gorbachev, and why, in his view, it had to differ from China’s.

The Moscow Times published Bazhanov’s original article in English in March. The contents of both articles are basically the same; with a few differences in the succession of his points.
