Arrests in Shishou, Hubei Province

Police in Shishou City (石首市) have reportedly arrested relatives of  Tu Yuangao (涂远高), a chef at Yonglong Hotel (永隆大酒店), who according to findings of local authorities had committed suicide. Many people found the circumstances of Mr Tu’s death ominous and believe it was homicide. Mr Tu’s death led to riots in Shishou  shortly after his death had been reported on June 17. The authorities apparently stick to their finding that Tu Yuangao committed suicide by leaping from a high building (which probably refers to the building where his body was found, i. e. the Yonglong Hotel, but offered a compensation of 80,000 RMB in compensation to Mr Tu’s family, according to chinanewswrap. The amount, co-offered by the authorities and Tu Yuangao’s employer, seems to have been intended to calm down the public.

China Radio International (CRI), quoted by Radio Australia, reports that at least five relatives of Tu Yuangao have now been arrested by local police and are under investigation. Relatives of Mr Tu’s are apparently accused of having triggered the riots of last month. In addition to the five relatives, twenty-three people who are suspected of inciting riots are also under arrest, reports Radio Australia. The local authorities were not available for comments on the issue.
