How Ugly Sex and Dogs can be

Last month I bought myself the first MP3 player of my life. And once I got it, a friend of mine put a lot of old music on it, stuff that was very popular in the 1980s. I heard those songs back then too, but had almost forgotten them since. Nina Hagen sang about undressing and having Schnapps / hard liquor while doing it, and about drug abuse and madness. Sex could be ugly. It was a strange way of looking at love, but realistic in its own way.

She sang about dogs, too. If you really like dogs, you may not like the way she’s barking and yapping along the song. But if you dislike dogs, or if they get on your nerves only once in a while, even if you have ever felt only the mildest desire to take a gun and to finish some off, you might have a good laugh about stuff like Wau-wau.

Anyway, it’s November, the month of the dead, and Herrmann isn’t only high, but departed.

  1. My puppy Sam sneezes violently* in protest of this blog post, particularly the song Wau-wau. Sam asks me to let you know that only dogs that have been grossly neglected will bite for no reason, or will shit all over the place. Raising dogs are just like raising children – you reap what you sow.

*Sneezing is a peculiar trait of poodles. It’s their way of showing a sense of humour.

  2. I grew up with dogs and like the dogs I know. It’s possible to have a personal relationship with a dog. But I don’t like the dog in the street whom I don’t know, and I insist that dogs can be ugly. On the other hand, have you ever seen an ugly cat? Even a drowned cat still looks better than a living dog.

  3. Yeah sure, cats are lovely. I’m thinking of adopting one next year when Sam is a bit older.

And it’s also true that some species of dogs have bad habits of turning against their humans, sometimes with no warnings or provocations. But come to think about it, cats are not always lovely. A friend of mine has a cat that enjoys hunting. It will bring back home half dead birds or rats to share with its human. This is apparently the cat’s way of showing affection. Lovely!

  4. Ziran jiu mei – by which I’m not implying that human beings should have fun with half-dead birds. But human beings who hang a chime around a cats neck out of love with birds are ugly. It’s nature, and the birds have a fair chance. They can fly. Cats can’t. :-p
