I think that Republic of China would have come more naturally, MKL.

Taiwan takes part in a number of international events, including the Olympic Games, under the name of “Chinese Taipei” (中华台北 or chunghua taipei), a carefully crafted label to appease Beijing.

As far as I know, the name was chosen by KMT in the late 1970s, they were against the name “Taiwan”, which was one of the options on the table, because they thought it might send out the confusing message to the people, that ROC is only limited to “Taiwan province” instead of all of China (and possibly Mongolia). I think appeasing commies was not their main concern. What do you think?

Typical of the Olympic organising committee’s CYA attitude – likely no-one in an official position had even seen the thing to complain, from the photo in the BBC story it could just as easily be the Burmese flag.
