But the SCMP is a good paper and should actually be worth a subscription. Anyway, the consulate’s “russophile” notice caused a nationalist stir, and according to the SCMP, the Chinese foreign ministry (not the foreign minister, as I wrote above, confirmed the missing of a fisherman. How the public pressure built, the article doesn’t tell, but I suppose at least the relatives were informed, and then you have the internet, particularly microblogs – and I don’t think that you can censor this kind of information efficiently, and certainly not without looking like a “traitor”.

Btw, I find the idea of establishing an “early-warning” system as suggested by the FMPRC ridiculous. There is no need for a “system” – except for a reasonable navigational system on board the Chinese trawlers. That, and comprehension among the industry that not everything that they want to have is actually theirs. There is quite an unsavory brew of “patriotism” and economic interest on display here.
